Skill Based Training

Changing economy and changing technology calls for talents that can face the challenges to the attainment of organizational objectives. An organization can recruit new people with the specialized skills, which is expensive. On the other hand, an organization may choose to provide specific trainings in skill areas in demand. When adequate training is imparted to the staff, it not only motivates them to work harder, it acts like a refresher and keeps their minds sharp. Skill based training guarantees continuous supply of skilled workforce to meet the ever changing environment.

In the thriving services industry, skills appear and disappear much more quickly than a manufacturing industry. For instance, in the early twentieth century, a skilled lathe worker could practically make a career out of being a machinist, without learning any radically new skills in his career. This is not the case for today’s services industry.

An organization looks for reliable staff with the right attitude to work, if this is combined with an ability to pick up new skills quickly, he is the dream employee for a company. All the company needs to do is to provide regular training programs. Skill based trainings are different from a comprehensive educational training (e.g. the MBA). In skill based trainings, each training program has the specific focus to equip employee with a specific skill. Thus, you can have different programs to develop leadership skills and separate one to develop team working skills.

Skill based training typically begins with identifying desired skills, assessing the employees for that specific skills, determine the gaps and accordingly structure the training program.

Skills can be classified into ‘soft skills’ and ‘hard skills’. Soft skills are those that do not directly impact the productivity of work, once the training is imparted. However, it contributes in a substantial manner albeit indirectly to the effectiveness of the employee at work. ‘Hard skills’ on the other hand are very specific to the work that the employee does. One example of a hard skill would be a training in Java.

Training methodology for ‘soft skills’ and ‘hard skills’ are completely different.

Structuring a training for ‘soft skills’
‘Soft skills’ are more to do with the character and nature of the persons. Often, one can see traces of culture and upbringing in ‘soft skills’ possessed by the employee. Communication skills is a soft skill in question, the famous ‘nodding of head’ by an Indian employee that can be irritating and confusing to his western counterpart. Similarly, the extreme politeness with which the Japanese speak might be again of irritation to her western counterpart. Thus while structuring a soft skills training program, it is necessary to understand the audience for the training. Additionally, often ‘soft skill’ trainings involve ‘getting into’ the psyche of the trainees.

Structuring a training for ‘hard skills’
‘Hard skills’ on the other hand can very well be normal class room training sessions. However, again depending upon the training being imparted, it is essential to mix the classroom sessions with a generous amount of ‘hands-on’ exercises. Some ‘hard skill’ trainings even make the trainees to undertake a project for completion of the training. Typical ‘hard skill’ trainings would be computer programming language courses, software tool courses etc. These training programs too require an initial assessment of the trainees, so that the course may be tailored according to the audience requirement.

To conclude, skill based trainings can be seen as specific short training courses focused on imparting a certain skill to the trainee. This is quite different from a full time undergraduate course for instance. While a full time course often takes in a candidate with little or no knowledge of the subject, in skill based training, the emphasis is on imparting small quantum of skills, or augment existing skills. Thus, in skill based training, the candidates are expected to bring in related skills to the table before the training starts.
