The Significance of Exit Interviews
Archive

Exit interviews, as the name suggests, are those that are conducted when an employee leaves the organization. These are excellent ways for an employer to find out what is right and what is wrong with his or her organization. Employees leave an organization for varied reasons and while stopping them may be impossible, it is important to find out the reasons for their leaving, which could help you in the future.

Great source of information

Most employees face problems at some point of time or the other, during their employment. Alternatively, there are some factors in your organization that are absolutely great and worth retaining. Irrespective of whether the feedback is good or bad, it is important as an employer to understand what works and what does not and exit interviews help you understand that. However, it is important to create an atmosphere where the employee can actually give an honest feedback during exit interviews.

Making peace with disgruntled employees

Apart from being a mine of information, exit interviews are perfect forums for making peace with your employees. It is pertinent to note that such interviews can also be conducted with employees who are terminated. Under such circumstances, you can use this tool to ensure that there is no lawsuit in the future by addressing important issues that are the cause of such untimely termination of employment.

Improving HR processes and procedures

Given that any employee will be forthright when leaving an organization, you can actually use exit interviews as tools for improving your HR practices and procedures, where required. An honest assessment of your practices and procedures should be included in such interviews, which can then be put into practice to avoid further loss of good personnel. The information, so acquired, can be used for improving recruitment procedures, staff retention techniques, assessing training requirements and other important processes, which can be used to retain the existing staff as well as those that will be recruited in the future. In short, organizational development is given predominance through such interviews.

Positive work culture

Receiving and giving feedback is considered as demonstrating positive work culture amongst your employees. It is believed that companies, which are interested in listening to criticism - both positive and negative, are truly compassionate and understanding, which is extremely important for the overall development of the organization. Moreover, experts believe that with the help of exit interviews, you can actually retain a good employee, who would have been lost otherwise. In other words, the information exchanged during such interviews can help understand the reasons for the employee leaving the job. Where possible, the company can actually respond to these reasons in such a manner that the employee is retained, instead of being relieved of the duties.

Knowledge Transfer

Finally, exit interviews can be used as the basis for transferring knowledge related to various organizational activities between the employee who is leaving and the company.

Exit interview is a very essential function for HR associates. This helps us get a uninhibited feedback about the company and also, understand about the problems ailing the employees. However, as a word of caution,it is felt that we should look at the feedback in a very matured manner, keeping in view the Exiting employees profile and past record. This will help in weeding out Biased feedback that a disgruntled employee might give to settle scores with some other colleague or the company.
