The biggest storm of the year just dumped a foot and a half of snow on our city. But instead of curling up next to the heater with a book, my husband is in the garage dusting off the snow blower. Most people would see new piles of snow as a nuisance, but my husband sees it as a big, white heap of opportunity.

Through the roar of the engine and clouds of gasoline-scented exhaust, he pushes his way out to the sidewalk and goes up one side of the street and down the other. He doesn't just take care of the elderly woman a few doors down, but clears the driveway of the business executive across the street. It has become a well-known fact that no one on our block needs to strain their back with the shovel, or even put on their coat after a snowfall. They simply wait for the growl of the snow blower and the wave from my husband telling them their sidewalk and driveway is clear. This is how he makes friends out of neighbors.

Dear Professor Madure,

Thank you for such a useful snippet of thought.

Making friends through selfless social work is a mighty strategy.

It is a useful learning for me personally.

Looking forward to more such “thought provoking” thoughts.

Regards,

Lucy Doss

Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases; neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose.

CHEERS !!

When someone sets a long term and broad based goal, as in this case of the man blowing snow from the neighbourhood (not just his drive way) to make friends, we immediately dub the act as selfless.. It is in reality an expanded concept of self. This is one form of supra consciousness.
When we practice this regularly and repeatedly, threats and opportunities begin to appear synonymus. It becomes clear that all opposites come from the same divine source. What do we choose then? This is the height of spiritual living.
Let us be in love and peace.
