Dear Friends,

For effective & interactive participation from all members, let us consider this case below for a while now :-

It’s been some time now that I have been a part of the recruitment process, having sourced, headhunted, coordinated, interviewed and recruited people from diverse industries and backgrounds. Surprisingly, recruitment has always been a function where my strength has been and my interest been personified.

I assume, all of us might have learnt to interview people by either watching our seniors or remembering those few questions which were asked by your superiors to the candidates, so that you can ask the same when your turn arrives. In this period, there has always been one question that has ruled the interview process which is “Tell me something about yourself”, which I am sure must have been asked to everyone. Now, I have often been asked by my subordinates as to how to answer this question. Does the interviewer expect the interviewee to summarize to him the contents of his resume since he is extremely busy to have a peek at it ? OR he is bothered to look at the resume only when he feels that the interviewee has enough potential while he answers this question.

Somehow, I feel that the candidates these days are judged directly on their answering this question. But don’t you feel this is defeating the purpose of spending that time to develop a prospective resume and preparing for other competent questions ? , if the interviewer is just going to ask the same question and decide the fate of the candidate on that.

1] So, what do you people have your views on this ?

2] Do you think this question alone can be used to decide the fate of the person ? (atleast partially)

3] Is the uniqueness of each interviewer in asking their own self thought questions (after reading the resume) lost ?

Hoping for views, comments, discussions on this issue, as I feel all of you must be having their own piece of experiences to share. Also a request to all the non-active members to wake up and participate to learn more about this informative topic.

This is what I call coincidence. I was just about to put up this exact question for discussion and found that Sumail has already started a thread on it. Though, I wanted to ask what do you answer to "tell me about yourself" question so that we could have a list of answers and chose best ones to prepare on. But never mind, to maintain the sanctity of Sumail's query, I have the following to say:

Whether you like it or not, you will have to answer this question as many times as it will be asked. But you can make a plan. There are two types of interviwers - one who interviews to see whether the candidate can be referred for final discussion with the decision maker, and the other who himself has the final authority to select or reject the candidate. What I want to say is you can keep two types of answer to this question for these two types of interviewers.

For example, if you happen to answer to someone belonging to the first category,* then you can say, "I am an enthusiatic, energetic [HR/Mkt/Fin] professional... with [years] of experience in handling [activities]... Academically, I'm MBA from [institute].. Presently I'm working with [Company]." Give a pause after this much. Then question him back, "Is there anything more or something specific you would like to know about me?" 9 out of 10 times he will switch to another topic of discussion.

And if you happen to be interviewed by someone you feel can take a decision*, then the following answer to the same question will give you an edge:

"I am an enthusiatic, energetic [HR/Mkt/Fin] professional.... I'm in this profession for the last [years]. I have thoroughly enjoyed my stints with [companies] ... Academically, I'm a first class MBA from [institute].. Presently I'm working with [Company], which is into [business]. I aim to become a known face in my professinal fraternity. I am a fan of Adam Gilchrist. I love to sing. I read a lot and I also blog. I am known to be a cheerful, witty, soft spoken, knowledgeable, and well mannered person."

*Signs of identifying the Interviewer's status

1st category: Will ask "tell me about yourself" and will keep fiddeling with your CV without looking at you. His body language will suggest that he has already started preparing for the next question for you. Hence, keep your answer very short for this type of interviewers.

2nd category: Will ask "tell me about yourself" and will look at you attentively, keeping your CV aside for the time being.

Hope I have been able to reproduce my learning here till date.

Try to introduce some of your most important employment-oriented skills as well as your education and accomplishments to the interviewer. Answer to thie question is very important because it positions you for the rest of the interview. That's why this statement is often called the " Positioning Statement".


One should take the opportunity to show his/her communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Since there is no right or wrong answer for this question hence it is important to appear friendly.


The answers can be:


1) I am a person with strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to get along well with people. I enjoy challenges and looking for creative solutions to problems.


2)Besides the details given in my resume, I believe in character values, vision and action. I am quick in learning from mistakes. I am confident that the various tests that you have conducted will corroborate my competencies aptitude and right attitude for the job.
