I would like to know some good ways of doing salary benchmark survey . Could someone please give me some ideas on how does a company effectively undertake a salary benchmark survey.

doing salary benchmarking is not so simple. this is normally done by a thirdparty. alternate methods are by buying a report which is published by research agencies. for eg. nasscomm, cii, etc. have such reports.

Organizations may not be too comfortable sharing their salary data but with help of consulting organizations (without knowing the identity of the organization) market data can be taken & salary survey can be conducted.
