Dear Friends,

When was the last time, you picked up your cell in a meeting and had to face a bunch of eyes glaring at you ? Yeah, your call might be as important as your meeting was…but then who knew it, except you.

Mobile Phones or Cell phones have been injected into the corporate attire of every employee these days, no doubt, the work gets affected at every stage due to this significant device. But have you heard about any company instilling a policy for usage of cell phones in their HR manual ? I assume very few of them (MNC’s), coz Indian companies are yet to come up to tackle this issue which might affect the productivity if not controlled on time.

GSM, Color, Graphics, Multimedia, Web, Camera…that’s wat it has and to an extent has been also able to describe the class of an employee based on its model make… Read below, for what some MNC’s in America have done for this….

An April 2004 study by the Society for Human Resource Management in Alexandria, Va., found 48 percent of workplaces surveyed do not have a written policy on cell phones at work. Forty percent have a written policy and 12 percent plan to institute one in the next six months.

Talbot says many companies are considering new curbs because cell phones reduce productivity. "You can go to the bathroom and talk for a half-hour on your cell phone and your employers don't know what's going on," she said.

What's your say on this ??

I have not heard of any Indian company or any MNC in India practising any kind of cell phone restrictions, however wastage of time due to it can be left to the discretion of employees, the most that is done is keeping a track of their office ettiquetes by colleagues.....People at the managerial and senior levels are not usually not blamed or seen showing such attitude......

We can frame a procedure or policy prohibiting bringing of  personal cellphones into the work premises, if at all  to be allowed, should be kept with the employee switched off while in work,  allowed during tea/lunch breaks.  Further when such policy or system is implemented any emergency calls of employees are allowed to receive or make through the company land phone by  properly recording the same  so as to minimise the mis-use.

Yes indeed it is a very twisty problem these days that what is the right usage of mobile phones at work place.

I think these days companies do have policies wherein the guidelines are communicated to employees that mobiles are restricted in no mobile zones and if anybody wants to talk then one has to go out of NMZ..

Moreover it is individula responsibility to think and decide where, when and how to take a call. This can be explained to employees during their soft skill training sessions.
