Dear Friends,

Came across a live case of an employee who had been selected for a position in Finance (at middle management level); after joining the company albeit, he proved his worth with great effeciency but within a period of time it was discovered he didnot possess the educational qualification that he claimed during his interviews!

Case A: What should the company's/ HR's stand be in case he is at a senior profile than he should actually be placed in vis a vis his qualification? Should he be demoted or dismissed on account of being untrue?

Case B: What should be the HR's role in case the person had hidden his higher edu. qualification in order to take up the job? Should he be dismissed on account of being untrue in this case too?

Looking forward to a brainstorming session from all the stalwarts!

Thanks

Archana

First:
HR itself is at fault and needs to redress it's sytmems of verifications.

False declarations could spill into work and finance is very sensitive area of operation
prone to false declarations.

Second:
The employee must be penalised monetarily in terms of a freeze in increment for a few years and a reprimand that is in the know of senior management.

In one of the training sessions, an eminent faculty used 3-Fs ("fair, friendly and firm") to clarify the role of HR. Integrity is one of the most important issue that HR has to vouch for. Generally, it has been seen that we adopt double standards. In case a worker has stolen even a pack of Washing Powder and is caught by the Security, we screech our teeth and show firmness by dismissing him after following the due process of law. However, when it comes to senior people, our tone changes. This is not fair.

In my considered view, such a person cannot be kept in the employment, howsoever competent he may be. At the most, ( And I am recommending it most hesitatingly) one can ask such a person to put his paper voluntarily, failing which he should be dismissed.

Hello Friends,

In first case it is obvious that you have to curtail the association. It is not important weather the person has proved himself or not, but you can not keep side the fact that he has literally done malpractices. This is major misconduct & when someone does it specially with academics then it is better not to have such person with the Organization. Second important thing is that you have taken this person in Finance Dept. where you do all the monetary transitions. If a person can do this in his CV then why he will not do the same in his profile. Third thing - you will set this type of example in the organization, which will be very difficult for you to defend in future in any other case. And last but not the least - with such person's mentality organization will certainly face some problem in future.

Had all his statements/ papers were cross checked before he join then probably the problem would not have been augmented to this stage. Although, candidates submit photocopy of their educational certificates, however it's on the safer side for HR to cross check the original certificates also. I know one case when the candidate was giving excuses in showing original certificate & later it was found that he had done some tricks with photocopy certificate that he had submitted.

Now turning to your second case - This is entirely employee's personal wish weather to disclose his higher education or not, provided the same is not obtained by any company sponsored policy. However, while joining the employee must disclose his all (true) educational details, but not necessary all, which he obtain after his association with the Organization. I don't know how many people will agree with this. But this is like you can travel in 2nd Class by purchasing 1st Class ticket ( No one does it that is different story), however not vice verse.

When employee is not willing to disclose the higher education then it indicates two things. First he may not be interested to take up pressurized job due to his health or other personal reason Or he would be aware that there will not be any major return to him if he disclose his higher education & get elevated roles. And if the second reason is true then it is major concern for HR.
