Does Motivation Exist ?

Hello everybody

We know that there is a concept called "motivation" that rules every individual ! It s within him.. but

Suddenly I feel that there is nothing called motivation coz com what may; a person can never be motivated if he/she doesn't wish to do !!! and theories of motivation are just mere theories..and not a "process" that can be of any use..

Plz do someone help me out in clearing this doubt...!!! Can some one throw more light on"motivation" It 'll be really helpful!

Thanks

Rahul

Re: Does Motivation Exist ?

Dear rahul,

Although I'm not a person who can give you great insight into what actually motivation is, but through my interactions with people for almost 8 years now, what I can definitely say is that the greatest motivation for people comes from their jobs. If they enjoy what they
do, they will be highly motivated. hence to keep your guys motivated and get the best from them, one should always see that the person is well suited for his job, it helps him grow in life and coincides with the employee's career goals in life, helps him to maintain a work life balance and gives him a sense of satisfaction & recognition . Once this is achieved, the person shall be self motivated.

That the person is well taken care will add to it.

Re: Does Motivation Exist ?

Hello everybody,

I also feel Motivation is more of theory BUT by a consious thinking process we can imply thoes thoughts and motivate ourselves. This should be an ongoing process.

One way I do it is that I keep collecting thoughts and stories and when I feel I need to be peped up in sitaution when I am feeling low( we all do at times!) I read and re-read them and then I feel better. this all can be done by consicious thinking.

I would ask for guru's to come up with more on this issue.

Cheers

Sarah

Re: Does Motivation Exist ?

Dear rahul,

This article throws some light on "The importance of Motivating people."

Excerpt from Motivating People By Dale Carnegie

Even as a boy Andrew Carnegie discovered the astonishing importance that people place on their names. When he was ten years old, he had a father rabbit and a mother rabbit. He awoke one moring to discover that he had a whole nest full of little rabbits and nothing to feed them.

What do you suppose he did? Well, he had a brilliant idea. He told half of a dozen boys in the neighbourhood that if they would go out everyday and pull enough dandelions and grass and clover to feed the rabbirs, he would name the rabbits in their honor. The plan worked like magic, and here is the point of the story.

Andrew Carnegie never forgot that incident. And years later, he made millions of dollars by using the same tecnique in business. He wanted to sell steel rails to the pennsylvania Railroad.J. Edgar thomson was prisdent of the railroad then.so andrew carnegie, rememembering the lesson he had learened from his rabbits, built a huge steel mill in pittsburgh and called it the j. edgar thomson steel works.

now let me ask you a question. when the pennsylvania railroad needed steel rails after that where do you suppose j.edgar thomson bought them?

Re: Does Motivation Exist ?

Hello HR fraternity

The discussion raised by Rahulis quite interesting and very much thoughtful topic which is raised in one or the otherway in every ones life. As I have gone through all other fellow members who are real time HR and who are still graduating as HR professionals, couldnt get convinced to the fullest. But Prof Tandon has quoted a good example of Dale carnige who could motivate people to work for him.

Yeah its true that the management should inspire their employees to work for the accomplishment of the organisation growth but not for them which is happening in most of the companies now a days. As one of my friend said that money is the motivational factor ....yeah its true to some extent but not completely. Coz what we lack is the personal attachment, without that the person gets frustrated. When an employee have some personal problems he needs some ear to listen and soft and nice consoling words to get motivated and work efficiently. How many managers are there who could see to this and without taking advantage of the situation lend a helpful hand?

I agree that everyon shud have the self motivation concept to himself but as we are human beings with so many emotional feelings cannot just rely on our own. If that would have been the case then there wouldnt have been any sadness or trouble in the world. No need to have relationships. Its a very exceptional case that one can never get motivated unless he wish to. Everyone wants to get motivated by other especially whom he likes or whom he admires or the one who likes him. But the main point here is this motivation all depends up on the personal attitude of the motivator and motivatee(Law terminology).

To some extent motivational theories are very much applicable if at all implemented effectively and efficiently. They are not mere theories but have the practical orientation. In our daily life we do inspire the people around us knowingly and unknowingly, positively and negatively but we dont have any idea unless we are acknowledged by those incidents. Mere bonuses, vacations, high salary packages etc are not only the motivational factors. They only increase the status of the person in the society but personal, friendly attachment is the most important motivational factor every human being needs. Without that we all will be deemed as robots but not human beings.

So motivation is not mere a theory its there present in ourselves and in others...only thing needed is how you perceive it and make it to achieve success.

Thank you all who has taken time to go through my perception.

With regards
Professor Mamata
