Dear All ,
I was watching an advertisement on the TV . It shows a budding cricketer , a batsman , wearing big horn rimmed spectacles . He is able to sight the ball well , but on the edges of the spectacles his vision gets distorted due to the presence of the rim . As a direct result , he is not able to hit shots like square cuts or leg glance etc . This is apparently causing a problem in his career as a cricketer . Now he goes and buys Bausch and Lomb contact lenses , which promise all round vision and he begins to hit the bowlers all around .
As I was watching this commercial it dawned on me that we start wearing our spectacles at an early age and in our case , not only the horn rims pose a problem , but also the glass causes a distortion . We call our spectacles by various names like education , specialization , expertise etc . Based on these spectacles we collect even advanced spectacles which are our designations like manager , teacher , scientist etc . As we go along we keep collecting even more advanced spectacles some of which are totally incongruent with our earlier spectacles like a doctor becoming a CEO of the hospital , a scientist becoming Dean of the faculty , a teacher becoming a Principal .
We begin to identify ourselves and others by the spectacles we wear . See your visiting card , your spectacles are right there . The brand name of the spectacles also does matter . Bigger and better known the brand name , we assume the richer the person to be .
What we do not seem to notice is the tunnel vision and distortion created by the spectacles and loss of binocular vision , and the obstruction to the natural movement. We also believe that our spectacles are the best that there are and everybody else's are useless or worthless . We can also prove our point by wearing their spectacles for a few minutes , we can show that we are not able to see anything . I can see clearly by my spectacles , I cannot see by your spectacles so your spectacles are the problem . We forget that to be able to see through someone else's spectacles we need acquire his vision too .
Once in a while let us begin to take off our spectacles and use our natural vision in all its grandeur and glory .
Regards Chakraborty
