Six Sigma and Lean are well validated frameworks to drive breakthroughs in organizational business process for delivering superior customer satisfaction, lower operating costs, accelerated cycle time, enhanced quality, productivity and reducing risks.

HR has a very important strategic role to play in driving organizational performance. In addition, HR also has to successfully and credibly deliver operational services to internal customers of the organizations like Service Delivery / Operations, Sales, Marketing, Accounts/Finance, IT, R&D and other parts of the business.

Key HR processes that can significantly benefit from Lean Six Sigma applications include:
  • Create and Manage HR Planning, Policy, and Strategies
  • Develop, Train and Counsel
  • HR Organization
  • Manage Employee Information
  • Payroll
  • Recruit, Source, and Select
  • Redeploy and Retire Employees
  • Reward and Retain Employees
In each of the above areas:
- The important measures/metrics should be selected
- Current status of the metrics be baselined
- Organization expectations / targets be established
- Lean Six Sigma methodology be deployed to bring about breakthrough improvements
- Sustain and set targets to reach higher levels going forward

The metrics chosen should be a good mix of lead (result/output) and lag (process/enabling) indicators. It should also have a blend of cost, quality, productivity, cycle time and learning based metrics in order to ensure a good balance.

With increasing outsourcing of HR processes by global clients, it will be very useful for operations executives who handle and deliver outsourced HR processes in BPO/ITES/Shared services environment to acquire Lean and Six Sigma skills and capabilities so that they can deliver much more value to clients by bringing about breakthrough improvements in the outsourced HR processes.

Superior levels of performance achieved through applicatin of Lean Six Sigma can subsequently be leveraged to set up incentive based contracts with clients thereby driving higher profitability for the outsourced provider.
