Today, we are in a globalized era and you will be compensated not how hard you work but by how much value you add to the world around you. Think about it. If you are being currently paid Rs. 100/- per hour this amount is being given to you not simply because you were physically present at your desk for those sixty minutes but because you have added Rs. 100/- worth of perceived value during those sixty minutes. So, the monetary rewardd you receive is determined not by how long or how hard you work but by much value you add for your organization. This is one of the prime reasons why a doctor gets paid much more than a waiter in a star hotel. Is the doctor a better person? Not necessarily. Is the doctor a harder worker? Probably not. Is the doctor smarter? who knows whether he is or not? But one thing is certain: The doctor has accumulated far more specialized knowledge and specific know how than the waiter who works in a hotel. There are fewer people who can do what the doctor does and as a result he is perceived to be far more valuable to the marketplace. Thus, he commands not only respect, status in the society but earns extremely well by putting his valuable work to his patients. That is the reason why the doctor is paid over ten times than the person who is a waiter. Money simply becomes a symbol for how much value each person has added to the world at large. So to be paid more money in your work place, you must add much value to the world. Add the best way to begin adding value to the world is to start becoming a more and more valuable person. Acquire skills no one else has. Read books that no one is reading. Think thoughts no one else is thinking. In other words, you cannot have all that you want if you remain the person you are. To get more from your life, you need to be more in life. Keep increasing your value by becoming a specialist and not by remaining a generalist. This write up has been written by Iyer Subramanian. |
