Dear Friends,

One of my friends has 4 years of experience in HR industry.
Now he got an offer from a pharmaceutical company to work as an Admin officer.

Could you kindly suggest that will it be a good option to join as an Admin officer?

As some believes it always benefits to have the knowledge of all the areas.

How will this move benefit him in long journey?
Will there be any chance to get back to the HR industry after some years of service?

Kindly share your views on the same.

Thanks n Regards
Barkha Jain

Dear Barkha,

Companies have often given opportunities to people for switching over their job facets from administration to human resource division particularly becoz few companies in India yet function traditionally with only an admin dept. managing few functions pertaining to the human resource domain. This has rather prepared the individuals to handle few HR tasks even though not the entire function of the same but having realised the distinct roles of the same.

Considering the above scenario, it has been fortunate for a few many individuals for having been considered for full fledged human resource roles in companies that have established HR divisions. Hence, this paradigm shift from admin to HR has really worked wonders for these individuals who started on a note to working as people managing routine and non-specialised tasks, to professionals working on specialised functions considering the organisation, employees and the technology. Now this is what we call as a horizontal growth of  an  employee considering the areas of work performance and operation.

Now as for your friend, who claims to have four years of experience in the human resources is too ahead by way of experience to consider a role as an admin officer. It's like going completely backwards. And yes, if the role was of an "HR and Admin Officer" , there would certainly have not been any problems since that would give him the niche specialisation of managing both the functions well enough. But, switching from HR to admin is not something that I would advise considering the fact that the economical scenario at present is where industries are seeking for professionals specialised in certain functions and areas. No wonder, if by way of unsure decisions, your friend accepts the job of an admin officer, he would find himself getting seriously rooted in the domain of administration and in future when he seeks for a change again to the  human resource domain, getting thru it shall be an umpteen difficult task.

Though there are certain positons that demand a mixture of admin and HR but that are only at the senior levels. For eg. Manager HR & Admin. So, we see that if your friend was someone at the senior level and the role demanded dual tasks (admin & hr) functions, there wud have always been a go ahead from all sides.

Concluding on this note, let your friend look for greener pastures in the HR field itself or for roles that have the cream of HR and a dash of admin functions since that would help him to be on the track of specialised domain areas.

Regards,

CHRM

Hi there,

A very interesting query u have raisin…..i would say that

In future companies who would be expanding their operations will definitely be splitting HR and Administration. In large companies HR deals with Humans (employees) and Admin deals with resources and logistics of a company. Specialized courses are also been developed for Admin Area, so that person studying them can go into the specific admin field.

If ur friend is a specialized HR person meaning that he has a specific qualification and experience in HR then he should not move into the admin side. He will get good opportunity in future as HR is a growing field.

Warms Regards

Dear Barkha,

Expereince of Admin is always good because it makes an HR practitioner quite complete. However, a long stint in Admin might take him away from current HR practices, which are ever-dynamic.

My advice is that let him join there, provided the compensation package is attractive.Once there, let him try moving into core HR group of this organization. If he finds it difficult, he can switch over to some other organization after gaining 2-3 years of Admin experience.

Hope you are doing fine,

Regards,
