When big bucks beckon
Big bucks - that's what everyone is after. The car, the house, the holiday in the hills.
Those are the reasons you sit at work till late in the night. The reasons you tell the boss how smart her ideas are whenever she's making an ass of herself. That's why you toil hard all year round just so you can get a good increment.
And that's the reason why, when you get a job that offers you more money, you blindly take it. However, the reality is that switching jobs is just not worth the extra couple of thousand bucks you are going to make. In fact, money is the last reason you should change jobs. Here's why:
Work culture
Every company has a work culture and you have already settled into yours. Changing jobs means settling down all over again - setting new equations, making new friends, adapting to your new company's style of working. In short, too much effort for a couple of thousand rupees.
Designation
If a new job doesn't come with a higher position and newer responsibilities, you'll probably end up doing the same job that you were doing earlier. Besides, the lateral switch is not going to help your career any.
Company size
Moving from a reputed company that is adding glamour to your resume to a slightly higher position in a relatively unknown company is sheer stupidity.
Although steering the company towards growth can be challenging, smaller companies are mostly economical with their resources. Coming from a larger company, you might it find it dissatisfying to cope with lower-end technology or budget constraints.
Location
If your new job involves working on the other side of the city, making you change railway lines or wait in long bus queues to take you to some remote suburb, forget it. Apart from the stress, most of the extra income you'll get will go in the extra traveling you do.
Perks
Compare the non-financial benefits like leave, Mediclaim, working hours, food allowance, maternity leave and financial incentives of your present company with those the new company offers. Sometimes, the value of these benefits may be higher than the extra income offered.
Statistics too have proved that employees prefer a job that offers them respect and security than one that offers them just plain big bucks because the former is invaluable. So think twice!
Why you SHOULD change jobs
•Higher position, wider responsibility, a new role to perform
•Friendlier work culture
•A bigger, more reputed company that will be perceived as a step up
•More fringe benefits
•Smaller commute
•More money
