All it takes
They say there's no shortcut to success. But some people obviously have a formula for it.
These are the winners, who are working steadily towards a shining career, who always get better promotions and bigger increments than their colleagues and you are left wishing you were more like them.
Well, no matter which industry you are from and what kind of job you do, here's a formula that'll make sure you succeed at anything anywhere:
Take on responsibility
All organisations love employees who are willing to take on responsibility. Companies feel great when they have someone’s collar to grab for work not done. Although you get the flak for work undone, remember that you will also get full credit when you deliver on time.
Motto: “Why don't I do this?” “Let me take care of this project.”
Take Initiative
This is another quality companies appreciate in their employees. They like people who, instead of running to the bosses for every little grouse, have the ability to solve their own problems.
For instance, if a problem arises while your boss is on holiday, most employees would only call him on his cell and ask him to suggest a solution.
But an employee with initiative would already have thought of a solution and will suggest it to the boss while alerting him to the problem. Initiative also refers to the enthusiasm with which you take on extra work instead of waiting for it to be delegated to you.
Motto: “Can I do this?” “Shall I try this?” or “Would this work?”
Be creative
Creativity basically means looking at the same job in new ways. If there are certain tasks you do daily, then a creative person would find different and novel ways of doing those tasks faster, better while a normal employee would just languish in the routine procedures.
If there were recurrent problems in systems or processes, a creative person would look at not only studying and solving these problems but also investigate for better solutions.
Motto: “Why isn't this working?” or “Is there a better way of doing this?”
Appreciate team effort
You might be a genius on your own but can you be part of a team. Most companies prefer team players to individual geniuses, as no matter how efficient, an individual cannot produce huge volumes of work alone. Every organisation is a team and you can't go very far if you find it difficult to be a team player.
This doesn't mean that you become a passive contributor acting blindly on instructions of the leader. Being part of a team means you accept the authority of the leader, appreciate your team member's efforts, contribute wholeheartedly towards the common goal as if your personal success depends on the team's success (it does too) and ultimately share the credit of your success with everyone.
Motto: “Why don't we do it this way?” “We are not meeting targets. What is it that we are doing wrong?”
Learn to be efficient
Statements like “That is not my job. Why should I do it?” will never work. To be successful at any job, you should be knowledgeable about everything that goes on first in your job, then your department and then the company.
Companies love all-rounders, multi-tasking employees who can do several functions easily and efficiently and without complaint.
This not only adds value to your personal assets but because your company will find it difficult to find another person with same diverse mix of abilities as you do, it also makes you indispensable at work.
Motto: “Let me try learning this today.” “That might not be my job. But let me do it anyway.”
