Here are a few tips for effective influencing :

1. Avoid beginning with details : give a big picture first.
2. You may take time to develop a relationship but do not overlook it.
3. Emphasize on a good work ethics.
4. Use logic with clearly identified priorities and goals.
5. Be willing to wander off towards new and different directions.
6. Appeal to their role as a consultant and advisor.
7. Do not take others’ apparent belligerence personally : be flexible.
8. Appeal to their curiosity : use reason and logic.
9. Keep asking questions about their opinions and ideas.
10. Appeal to established traditional values.
11. Use main stream humour but be generally serious.
12. Appeal to their need to innovate.
13. Make your boundaries clear.
14. Do not interrupt them.
15. Emphasize what is in it for them.
16. Show appropriate emotion to support their position.
17. Allow them time to read and have moments of silence.
18. Do not get too close physically. People generally dislike it.
19. Take their stress seriously but not personally.
20. Be genuine in your intent and purpose. They can see it through your eyes.
21. Appeal to their sense of responsibility.
22. Use the promises of physical rewards such as group dinner etc and keep your word.
23. Avoid a complex vocabulary.
24. Avoid a reference to considerations for others.
25. Notify them if you are going to be late.
26. Emphasize that they are in control.
27. Be a friend even if you are a boss.
28. Be presentable.
29. Do not make personal remarks.
30. Do what you say and say what you do.
