Résumé speaks for itself; it states what you are, and where you want to be. With the role of HR professionals widening with the changes in the business world, any additional experience is an added advantage. The shift into defining the strategies by HR in the recent years has brought about a different meaning to a career in human resources. Getting noticed amongst a set of résumés requires conscious effort from the part of the employee.

Before drafting the résumé the candidate must identify the probable employer, and analyse his area of business. He should ensure himself that the expected career switch and advancement is possible through a job in the short listed company. With many companies having outsourced a great many of its HR functions, one should guarantee the presence of the role before sending out the application.

Once the openings or a list of roles has been identified, the next step is tailoring the résumé and the covering letter to match the role in mind. A single résumé to all the companies will fail to attract the attention of the prospective employer. Achievements defined in the résumé must have significant impact or relationship to the job applied for.

Like any résumé, the résumé for HR professionals should point out the significant accomplishments made by the candidate. The area of specialisation and his contributions to the same must be highlighted. With the scope of work in HR widening, the area of specialisation could be wide and varied. A candidate’s accomplishments might vary to his role in and input to recruitment and retention of the key employees of his organisation even during the times of recession. With many companies acquiring or merging with foreign companies, the people management requires the guidance of an expert to maintain a cordial relationship amongst the employees. With many opportunities springing up for an HR professional to display his talents and skills, highlighting his achievements and the knowledge in those area of work that is relevant to the job applied for should be emphasized in his résumé.

The past experience could have helped the individual in gaining knowledge that has augmented his skills. These should be identified and résumé should be used as a medium to sell the skills so gained. If possible, it should reflect how the candidate could employ it in the line of business of the new company. This is possible only after understanding the market of the company and its general policies.

The résumé should be drafted with an objective in mind and must revolve around it. Jargons should be avoided at all costs as it can render them useless. If the candidate was forced to leave his current employer on account of performance, he should mention the measures taken by him to overcome the negative feedbacks. However, the candidate must wipe out the reason for the loss of employment and the negative factors in the résumé.

In short résumé should reveal your accomplishments so far and the probable accomplishments to the new employer in a clear, concise manner.
