The Law of Opposites

The universe has been created by the play of opposites. The high and low go together. . Where there are mountains, valleys have to be there; higher the mountains deeper the valleys. All photographers know the beauty that is created by the play of light and shade. A vessel has to be emptied before it can be filled. In Pranayam (the practice of yogic breathing) emphasis is placed on breathing out. If we manage this well, good breathing-in happens automatically. Similarly if we keep the mind empty of pre-conceived notions, original insights will appear in the mind field automatically. Having realized this I have stopped thinking. Now I find solutions appearing along with the problems. I do not have to prepare for seminars in advance. The seminar unfolds by itself.

The opposites are held together by an existential force of cosmic proportions, as such they cannot be separated. An attempt to do so is doomed to fail. If we try, as humans often do, either in their ignorance or arrogance, the curse of a spiral of suffering is unleashed. We have seen this happen since recorded history, but have refused to learn this lesson. The opposites are in play according to a cosmic law in which there is no victor and no loser. Sometimes one seems be on top, later the other. The figure of yin and yang depicts it beautifully. Can we say by looking at it which is inside and which is outside, which is above and which below? All such questions are irrelevant. The process of enquiry by question and answer being an intellectual exercise cannot decipher this law. We need to rise above this method, which is basically dualistic and reductionist. We need to go to the core of the phenomenon. Meditating to a point of nothingness is the way, which is in reality is no way since there is no coming or going and no effort is involved. There is a complete absence of doing of the kind we know of.

Let us see the kind of misery we have brought upon ourselves by flouting this law. Let me take an example. The two sexes represent yin and yang. Instead of letting them play in love we have introduced competitiveness in their relationship. We are squandering precious resources in proving the superiority of one over the other. Some even claim that they come from different abodes (planet Mars and Venus) that they belong to different species. There is no end to the stupidity to which we have sunk in separating and alienating the male from the female. Lots of scholars are busy doing doctoral research to prove the myth as the truth. All we need to do is to accept that they are inseparable, that together in their playful love they create the universe. When is this wisdom going to dawn?

I am certain that if we solve this primary myth, all other problems would evaporate into nothingness. The problems caused by the separation of capital and labour, the managers and workers, the leaders and followers, innovation and standardization, marketing and manufacturing, the practice of sciences and the arts, thinking and feeling, rationality and spirituality and many such, would fall by the wayside. We have to stop thinking in terms of a competition, of winning and losing, of superior and inferior, of better and worse. We have to get into the spirit of creative play.

There are infinite pairs of opposites. We cannot even prepare an exhaustive list. It is not even necessary. Each one of us as a microcosm of the universe is a part of the play. The play is going on within us too. We are the play. Just let it happen and enjoy.
