HR professionals Vs administrators

I was interacting various HR/IR professionals all over the sector. Some are seasoned professionals having good institutional background. But I was very upset when I understand what they are doing

a) 80% professionals were not knowing psychometric tests

b) 80% were not aware about assessment centers

c) 99% were involved in PMS system, but they did not know effect and cause

d) Very few professionals were aware about scientific models of identification training need and evaluation of training imparted.

I observe that only 5% professionals are involved in yearly budgeting. Most of the professionals don’t read or enrich their knowledge at all. I agree that organization not necessarily practice few points discussed above, but at least professionals should be sound on above issue. The same is related to IR concepts. New professionals don’t know how & where to approach in critical situations.

HR professionals are stuck with HR fun activities only like in BPOs and IT sector. They are wasting their energy and talent organizing birthdays, various days and activities where no HR skill is required.

Most of these professionals are doing their day-to-day routine work, where they may be happy as they may be getting good salaries and glorified designations.

The question is how many HR professional are about their business, strategic intent, business needs, global perspective. The organizations are also responsible for the same. Even their expectations are also not cleared from the professionals.

What’s say?

Re: HR professionals Vs administrators

Just to respond to your invitation, I have difficulty in understanding why this is a topic of concern especially when it is based on assumption of interaction with some people in the field. Are we discussing this to show how experienced or how knowledgeable we are in the field? What would it change if all of us agreed or disagreed? Do we intend to provide remedial measures or recommend to Schools not turn out graduates without proper knowledge of what HR person should know in theory even if it is not practiced. The way the discussion is going will conclude with the obvious - tell me any profession where there are no quacks - and what are we going to do about.

Hi Gunjan,

I agree with others who have expressed similarly as to why are you airing such fake concerns. Haven't you taken on your shoulders a lot of unnecessary load?

Why create negative ripples? What is your positive contribution?

Why don't you take the lead and do something positve & constructive & then share? Stop basking in the glory of this false debate that you are generating.

We all have a lot on our hands already. And for God's sake lets take some pride in what we do? Either there is a crib that we HR professionals do not do enough or i see people cribbing about not being a premier B-School MBA.

What does it give us only negative feelings.

Re: HR professionals Vs administrators

Hello All,

I have been following this thread with a lot of interest (mostly as a lurker) and am now seeing it turn alarmingly, a bit personal and ugly as well. May I submit the following to the learned members:

1. I think all of us should respect the views of each and every member of our community. This really is what diversity is all about.

2. Gunjan has just aired what corporate India is echoing to day that HR needs to move from execution to a more pro active role as a business partner and enabler in an organizations growth. It has all to do with how we define who we are and what we do.

3. This community is I beleve for the sharing of best practices amongst us, to find out the various challenges that we face and to leverage the collective wisdom of this group to help find concrete and lasting HR solutions to Business Needs. So can we all look to ourselves as business enablers whose ultimate destinantion is the Boardrooms of corporate India.

4. Some members will use this community for ends like recruitment, etc.- which is something we will all have to live by. But can we all go beyond that by challenging our collective selves - for starters - can we have a "topic of the month" where we all contribute our mite to making the discussion richer. This will serve all of us well rather than holding fellow members up to public scrutiny for their perceived sins of commission and omission.

5. Finally can all of us commit to being more tolerant and patient of our community members and also will we commit to being "true" HR professionals who uphold the highest values of this profession.

The objective of this mail is NOT to ruffle feathers or hurt anybody. It is to get together and build fellowship and community amongst ourselves and set a possible direction for our immediate interactions.

Group- your positive views please?

Re: HR professionals Vs administrators

Dear all,

All company heads can sit and make tall claims that HR managers are useful or useless in varying degrees - that is not important. How do we feel after a day's work - that is important.

All companies have a HR requirement even id the CEO takes care of it all himself - If there are people in an organisation then there is a HR however insignificant and mis named too.

Coming to the postings here - I feel that a lot of us have a lot of time to write out flak and flaming accusations - what a wast of time.

Reminds me of Mulla Nazurudin's story -

Mulla had taken loan agains his land. The money lender claimed his money. The mullah could not pay back so the moneylender demanded that the mulla should give him everything that is grown on top of the land.

Come harvest - the mulla was ready to give the money lender his share - all that was grown on top of the land was sent to the money lender's house. The man came rushing to the mulla demanding the meaning of sending him sacks and sacks of leaves.

The mulla came back with - I kept my promise - everything that was grown on top of the soil has been sent to you - I grew carrots this season - the carrots are with me and the leaves - sack fulls have been sent to you!

I think we too need to look for the carrots and not be fighting for the leaves.

Often I am tempted to think that a lot of people spend time writing inconsequential comments on others efforts.

I see nothing wrong with recruitment postings -(many people have benefitted from it). promo information about training programs or anything at all. Take what you want from it and leave the others alone. Contribute if you can positively - or sign out of it - why is there this unnecessary urge to champion maybe causes into wannabes - I wonder???!!!

My regards,

Menaka
