What's better start in HR - Generalist or Function

Hi All,

I see a very active involvement of all our HR mates in the Industry and this group has helped me a lot when I attended Business School as well when I got on to the Corporate World. Its helped a great deal in being updated with the latest HR trends and the way companies design their People practices. Companies can also benchmark their HR practices and keep it in par with industry standards.

I always believe that in our times speed is fine but speed with no direction will probably lead to at the wrong place faster. Iam looking for a career in the Human Resource Field. I need guidance in terms of where do I expand my horizons to. In a typical HR career should one actually look at gaining Functional expertise in the HR domain or should one look at being a Generalist doing many things at one time and losing your focus.

I personally feel that somewhere down the line you get perturbed at what you do and tend to forget that you are an HR Professional…..HR Guys pls give your inputs to this. I would really appreciate this for my growth and for the good of the budding HR professionals in the industry.

Cheers

Meera

Hi,

There are 2 options available to any HR Professional for beginning his/her career. It is very important to be a visionary & planning accordingly career objectives & subsequently path on the basis of your interest & knowledge.

Being in generalist role one acquires info & knowledge of various HR activities & also it enables one to decide which HR function interests more where in functional expertise benefits in-depth knowledge & skills. Job options are very limited in India for Functional HR professionals & during current scenario companies are opting for generalist HR professionals.

i hope you could plan according to your targets where to start from
