Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Hi,

Your suggestions for the below mentioned scenario will be appreciated:

One of the employees in our organization (She has been with the organizations for the past 2 years) has her appraisal due in March 2010. But she is going on her maternity leave from October 2009. Will she be eligible for her appraisal if she is on leave for 3-4 months, say till January?

What if she is denied her appraisal due to her absence?

Keep your responses flowing in!!!!!

Cheers,

Radhika

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

No female employee who is on maternity leave should be denied appraisal only because she was on leave. Maternity leave is statutory requirement and she is on paid leave during Maternity. Hence, she is eligible to get the appraisal.

The management may look at the performance of the employee excluding the period when she was on leave and decide on the appraisal to be given. most of the companies will have such terms clearly defined in the appraisal policy.

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Dear friends,

It would be generally considered as unfair when any employee is kept aside for the reason that she is on Maternity Leave. However, the HR should tactfully handle such situations where the employee should not feel that  she is ignored because of her ML.  HR should also consider her present and past performance, number of occasions she had availed benefit under maternity leave,   & convey  the employee for a proportionate increase or no increase in pay, depending on the merits of the case.  Appraisal mean that there is no need to compulsory revise or increase the pay but the appraisal be conducted in a transparent manner where the employee does not have any feeling that she is neglected and the increase or no increase given is purely based on her past performance.

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

She is eligible for the same & could be rated on her worked performance upto the date from where she went on leave.

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Hi Radhika, Its a very nice query raised by you. If you think practically she should be appraised on prorata basis. i.e for the period she has actually worked for that particular year. Also, appraisals during maternity leave should be properly defined in the maternity policy to avoid any legal actions. However, this might have a negative impact on the concerned employee as well as other female employees. If she is a good performer it might affect her performance. You have to be very careful in such cases. We are responsible for designing the policies but at the same time we are also responsible for the managing the Human Resources in the organisation. Denying her appraisal will only result in demotivation and distrust in the employees. Urmila
