Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Hi,

Your suggestions for the below mentioned scenario will be appreciated:

One of the employees in our organization (She has been with the organizations for the past 2 years) has her appraisal due in March 2010. But she is going on her maternity leave from October 2009. Will she be eligible for her appraisal if she is on leave for 3-4 months, say till January?

What if she is denied her appraisal due to her absence?

Keep your responses flowing in!!!!!

Cheers,

Radhika

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

To read such a question in current times is disheartening. Will a similar question be raised for Paternity leave?

The female employee should in no case be denied of her appraisal. Appraisal should be based on her performance during the rest of the year and purely on a pro-rata basis.

Organizations are required to comply with the statutory requirements and should be fair & sensitive towards the employee's efforts & performance around the year.

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Appraisal should be conducted for the employee.

She is on ML which is as per prevailing laws of our country. Ideally her performance should be reviewed taking the period she has worked.

A policy incorporating this clause along with a minimum period of work( including holidays, week offs, approved leaves) say 7-8 months,in a year will be helpful in addressing these issues.

An employee being ignored just for ML is a bad practice....HR should be steadfast on this. Also it might act as a dissatsfaction trigger in other female employees as well.

These small but important decisions not only motivates people, but also does a lot about the image of the corporation and its practices.

Regards

Deepankar

Re: Appraisals during Maternity Leave

Please remember that appraisal is for the entire year, in most of the companies the period  is from April to March. The employee has to spend minimum 90 days in the company to become eligible to have herself appraised.

In this case, she is on maternity leave as prescribed under rules. She will still be on your roster during the maternity period and will be entitled to all benefits. Her appraisal has to be done and she will be entitled to increment as per the company policy.
