Is Money the big M-otivator ?

hi,

I am wanting to initiate discussion on the topic that is " is money the sole motivator" ?

well to a great extent I am having to subscribe to that fact because,at the lower level anyways that is the single biggest motivator At the middle level ,as I am a student pursuing my PGDM in HRM I know for a fact that the salary package which a company offers takes precedence in the final choice. When we look at the salary structures of cheif executives which have bloated way beyond any sane Job Evaluation study would subscribe to looks pathetically vulgar. Why if money is not the main motivatr has the salaries for these people alongwith their innumerable perks and allowances grown to such alpine proportions?? I can already sense the counter argument coming towards me for the above thought, it would sound something like this: at the highest level it is more the sense of feeling wanted , it is more of the feeling of assinging importance and weoghtage to the job of the cheif executive which counts. And the abovbe is possible only through high levels of pay.I would say that to even think of such a possibility is either being "NAIVE" or being an ostrich with its head burried in the sand.
CEO`s all over the world demand and get what they want in terms of money because of the simple reason that no matter what level of self- actualiosation one acheives as per maslows theory one always craves for more , that is the basic psychological characteristic of the human mind. An anology here ;a lioness kills when it is hungry and finishes the meat , does it save for the next day?? no it does not it goes out and kills again.

but man tocks , stores ,it doesnt matter whether he has for today or even enough for tommorrow , he stores for the entire month, he is never satisfied. today he was consuming rice which cost him 20rs a kilo , as soon as his status improves in terms of economic worth he shall shift to a 40rs a kilo basmati rice, why , did the 20rs rice cease to satisfy his hunger??

so man needs more, he does not know "how much is too much" thus whtever the level money always remains a big motivator , YES other factors do matter but give him all the other factors and money which is lesser than what he expects or what the market rate is ,herzbergs twpo factor theory kicks into motion, money or rather the lack of it becomes a de-motivator.So dear HR managers and students never forget to factor the weightage of money whenever we try and implement any scheme for motivating human beings.

these are my views , hope to have made a difference in someone who reads it.

Thanks & Regards,

jitesh

Money can only be a SHORT term motivator, LONG TERM motivation would involve combination of several factors inclusive of money.

Jitesh, you are correct to some extent. But i guess at some point in your career we all feel that apart from the lucrative offers that companies are offering today, how is it helping the employees to deal with their personal and social lives? More and more organizations today are offering benefits like recreational facilities, creches for schools, medical camps for families, etc...which mean a lot to working couples...

To end my point, i will say money is not the sole motivator to engage employees in today's organizations.

Cheers!
