Dear All,

A Senior Professor at a Management school was emphasizing on the changing role of HR and says, when all the Operational HR is being outsourced, the strategy remains with Company which is mostly planed by operations and CEO, HR will gradually without fail will go extinct.

Can the members share their views ?

When I attended an HRM program in National University of Singapore in 1996, we had an interesting session by the HR Head of VISA . Apparently VISA had outsourced a very large number of jobs .
The HR Head of VISA had very clearly emphasised that one of the fundamentals in managing outsourcing is that you should know the outsourcing activity details thoroughly with all their details and why outsourcing adds value to the Company vis-a-vis getting the same jobs done in-house, economics of outsourcing included. The emphasis was on this aspect throughout her session of 2 hours as she had planted one more critical aspect of managing outsourcing. That is, if you do not know the details that have been outsourced , which keep changing with passing time, your Vendor will out maneouver you and, to prevent that you need to outsource to two competing Vendors all the time.
I do not know who this Professor is who made this comment. The fact of the matter is that to handle human interfaces of business - which will always be there - you ultimately need a HR Team (of whatever size) who understands the HR dimensions of business. needless to say, the Business and HR dimensions constantly keep changing like standing on two tectonic plates and some one has to manage the two together to produce results - through in-house activities or through out-sourcing or a combination of both. Knowledge management, Competency building, compensation management and their ilk need an in-house strategist and cannot be handled out.
God bless this Professor ! I do not agree with him at all.
