I want the group to help me out in deciding about a course program for employees , who are joining as freshers in the organisation. What all to include in such a training program ??

Dear Pooja,

Have all the employees undergone an induction programme ? This would be the first thing to do with them.

Regarding training apart from induction, I suggest you to first identify the responsibilities and the job they are recruited for. Incase it is a specific process job which is defined as a particular process in the organisation, in that case you would need to make them undergo a process training specific to the job they are supposed to do.

Incase that is not there, then I would suggest not to go for any training programme right now incase you are thinking on the lines of behavioral areas. Let the new joinees get the feel for the organisation. Let them get tuned into the organisational roles and the job responsibilities. I believe anything less than 6 months would be too early incase their is not an urgent need. Secondly also use Training as a motivation tool for the new joinees. At the time of joining the motivation level is quite high and people are very restless to get on to the the job. Let them feel into the process. A training 6 moths later would be more effective and also be a good motivator for the individuals.

If required some of the behavioral inputs could be covered in brief in the induction programs.

this is just an idea I share, you need to map it with the situations and your organisational requirements.

For me the organisational folklore and the organisational culture is very important. Like in our families we have certain do's and don't's the companies also have this.

Induction program is expected to articulate and let the inductee experience this. Also remove certain irritants and bond the inductee with the company.

I had privilege of doing this once with a consultant and it was fabulous. What we did was floated a call for all people to come on a week-end.

When they came we formed series of small groups and large groups and shared on various themes that concern the life in this organisation. The sharing was also from inductee to the seniors.

The bonding that we had through this process has lasted for quite sometime and to me it made a lot of sense.

For freshers,  here are the induction training...:-

1) Make him/her aware of company's rules, policies,procedures, HR practices.Ask him to read employee manual.

2) Let him/her introduce to all company's employees.

3)Inform about his duties and reporting relationship

4) Immediate manager will carry out further training(functional). This training may be of 3 months or 6 months.

5) Apart from this, appraisals, personality developments and motivational trainings are conducted.
