Gender bias in recruitments

I've noticed one thing during my tenure. Most recruiters if they happen to be guys, are biased towards the fairer sex (if they happen to be smart enough).

I remember my campus days when we could predict well in advance who'll get past the interviews (after the written tests were cleared) and we were right most of the time. Even if there were better male candidates for the job, he was rejected in favor of a girl. Don't know if anyone among you have guts to admit this fact (yes, its a fact, i've seen it in more than fifty companies)

regards,

reshma

Re: Gender bias in recruitments

Dear Reshma,

I differ from ur views. What u have shared could be an event which would have happened, but it is not a universal event, as u know , things change with leader to leader and time to time.

How do u know that the girl whom he / she had taken is not smart/intelligent, this is too prejudice feeling u have towards the girl as it is only a perceived notion. Even if that event has happened, I am sure there would be some reason for it. As goes in any game umpire is the ultimate decision maker. I take ur view that there are instances which is happening, but it is only a feeling, as u know, it would be difficult to execute or extract work through people who are dum or life for them would not be easy, and such people would not long last in any organisation, as there would be others who have to get work from her,it is a principal of survival to fittest, hence this gender bias is not an issue or a subject to be considered for discussion.

Re: Gender bias in recruitments

Hi Reshma,

As Hema rightly said that its an event, however its quite often that females are not being given due advantage or preferences as compare to males.

I would like to tell you my recruitment experience, when a specific requirement comes, we do mapping of all basic things and at time its not only skill set or attitude also other set of challenges are there like late sitting at times for project, going to clients manufacturing plant or site, flexibility of travelling on and off domestic and international, at times it clicks with females and at time it doesn't, now we cannot name this as biased recruitment, its a purely a process of matching up with the requirement, this experience of hiring may be different as per different industries.

Yes, by indulging some policies that minimum 10 or 20 % ratio will be of  females in an organization, when theres bulk recruitment for departments more preference to females specifically soft functions.

Forum like NASSCOM keeps on sensitizing the female inclusivity in the different IT and software section through there surveys, reports and statistics.

I think India will be fully developed the moment every girl child is educated and are on their feet.

Lets strive and contribute towards it in whichever way we can.

Regards,
Jyoti

Re: Gender bias in recruitments

As professionals, we should not be carrying this kind of a attitude and should judge a person on merits/skills/capabilities, and not on gender-bias.
